The IMPORTANCE of supervisions
Teaching yoga does not only mean knowing the principles and philosophy of yoga, creating and guiding organic sequences, understanding the benefits and contraindications of postures or pranayama, etc. In addition to all of this, being a yoga teacher means becoming a point of reference for students not only from a technical standpoint. Teaching inevitably means occupying a position of power and, consequently, responsibility: students in class bring their vulnerabilities and traumas to the surface. Moreover, the role of the teacher also involves relationships with colleagues, the owners of the facilities, payment management, marketing, and communication. All of these aspects are interconnected in a complex network that can benefit from open and non-judgmental conversations with a supervisor who can help in the process of untangling them.
While other health and care professionals can access personal supervision to manage the psychological and emotional burden that comes with exposure to others' difficulties, such support is not provided for yoga teachers. Support from a supervisor allows teachers to avoid the risk of managing difficulties on their own, which can lead to energy depletion or excessive emotional involvement. Individual and group supervision sessions can be crucial tools in the evolutionary journey of a teacher, helping them become a safe, stable, and authentic reference for their students, even those with whom the relationship may be more difficult and complex.
