In this meeting, Federica Caronna, a former student of the Advanced Training School and now an SCY Teacher, interviews Mark Morbe, a teacher at the school and one of our cofounders.
Mark is a psychologist and psychosomatologist who brought the Somatic Competence® model of the Institute of Integrated Psychosomatics into the dynamics of yoga.
In this occasion, we will listen to how the first steps unfolded, what it’s like for a psychologist to work and collaborate with yoga teachers, and how the training school is constantly updated and rethought to better address the complexities that students face on the mat.

Somatic Competence® Yoga, a trauma-informed approach
By Alessia Baretta and Mark Morbe
Article published in Yoga Magazine, September 2020.

Somatic Competence® Yoga is not a true style of yoga, but rather an approach, a “lens” in the teacher’s mind, guiding them in leading the practice and in their relationship with the students. It can therefore serve as a reference for teachers to rethink their practice, and for practitioners, it provides an experience that not only restores a general sense of well-being but also trains and teaches how to welcome the sensations emerging from the body and, ultimately, to inhabit one’s own body.

In particular, the practices provide students with tools to train their somatic competence, which is the ability to welcome somatic signals and translate them into awareness that helps regulate emotional states and cope with stressful life events.

Somatic Competence® Yoga
From the roots of yoga to yoga for hypermodernity

By Alessia Baretta and Mark Morbe

This article presents for the first time the basic principles of Somatic Competence® Yoga.

Somatic Competence® Yoga is a practice that, while remaining within the theoretical-historical framework of yoga, integrates into a current clinical intervention model. It focuses on what happens in the body and enhances individuals' resources for managing out-of-control somatic states. In a society characterized by speed, which makes everyone vulnerable to dysregulation and jeopardizes the sense of continuity of the self, SCY revitalizes an ancient teaching passed down to us by Patanjali. It provides practitioners with tools to regain stability and comfort amidst the whirlwind of hypermodern life.
